Potatoes

Storing & Chitting

After purchase, carefully empty seed potatoes into shallow boxes/egg boxes, keep frost free and store in a cool place. Six weeks before you wish to plant move potatoes into a light area of about 10 degrees Celsius making sure the potatoes are rose eye upwards. Potatoes may turn green (no problem quite normal). If you want large potatoes carefully remove some of the eyes leaving only a few chits, if you want baby potatoes then leave all the eyes and plant at half the distances.

Making your beds

Dig a trench 6 deep, width of spade, sprinkle 2oz potato fertiliser for each metre and lightly fork in (potatoes planted above), if slugs are a problem, now is the time to add slug pellets to the trench or 12-month-old soot. Use the soil that has already been dug out of the trench to carefully scatter on top of the potatoes to again leave the ground flat.

Once they start to grow through you should start to earth up, best done with a garden hoe, aiming to form a peaked ridge with the loose soil at the edge of the trench to prevent the potatoes turning green making them inedible. This may be required 2/3 times in the season.

Harvesting

Harvest when the haulms start to turn yellow and die back, lift the potatoes ideally with a potato fork avoiding any spearing of the potatoes. Earlies should be harvested and used fresh, for the new potato taste whereas Maincrop varieties can be stored for later use.

Once lifted leave them for an hour in the sun to dry. Place them in a hessian sack and store in a dark cool place. For long term storage it is recommended that Maincrop only varieties are used and that the haulms are cut off at least a week before harvest, allowing the skins to set and increase the storage life of your crop.

TOP TIP

You can nip the flowers off your potato haulms so that the plant directs all of the energy into the tubers to increase the yield.
